With Love, Hugs and Kisses…

PARENTING AS PADTRASTRO

In 2013, my life changed drastically. I ended a long-term marriage, moved from Houston to San Antonio, and soon fell in love with the woman who would become my partner and her two children.

In 2014 we began the process of co-habitation and as an only child growing up, plus having no experience in the last 20 years with children, it was an adjustment.

As a poet and writer, I chose to share my thoughts with the children visually. These are some of our favorite "missives" posted here.

*Padtrastro=Spanish for stepfather (both children are enrolled in dual language instruction here in San Antonio)

Back in college, we’d joke that Mark Hiebert had somehow become his own grandfather. This was meant with affection and admiration. While we were still sensation-seeking nihilists, Mark at twenty had already settled into wise reflection, observing the world with the insight of an old bard. Mark noticed things most of us missed.

It’s been a pleasure to watch Mark Hiebert cultivate his observational gifts into art of engrossing power. Whether its his photography or poetry, Mark’s work draws our attention to the small miracles unfolding in the inner and outer worlds. Mark’s art doesn’t tell us how to see, think or feel. It does something far more valuable: It makes a quiet argument that we take nothing in this life for granted.
